The announcement of Justin Trudeau’s resignation on Monday has changed nothing, claimed rival and Conservative Party chief Pierre Poilievre, in a social media post on X.
He said that Liberals will continue to “rip off Canadians for another 4 years, just like Justin", questioning them for supporting Trudeau since 2015 when he first swept to power.
“Nothing has changed. Every Liberal MP and Leadership contender supported EVERYTHING Trudeau did for 9 years, and now they want to trick voters by swapping in another Liberal face to keep ripping off Canadians for another 4 years, just like Justin," Poilievre, pipped to defeat the Liberals in the upcoming elections, said.
“The only way to fix what Liberals broke is a carbon tax election to elect common sense Conservatives who will bring home Canada’s promise," he further added.
Outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in his resignation press conference that Pierre Poilievre was not the right person to lead the country citing his views on climate change and freedom of speech.
“We need an ambitious, optimistic view of the future, and Pierre Poilievre is not offering that. Stopping the fight against climate change doesn’t make sense. Attacking journalists like the attack on Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) is not what Canadians need at this moment," he said.
Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday, saying he will leave office as soon as the ruling Liberal party chooses a new leader after months of slumping polls and internal division.
“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader," Trudeau, who has been in power since 2015, told reporters in Ottawa following a protracted political crisis that saw top Liberal allies urge him to quit.
It was not immediately clear how long Trudeau will remain in office as a caretaker premier.
He said the Liberal leadership race will be “a robust, nationwide competitive process."
