An Indian man, identified as Thomas Gabriel Perera, was allegedly killed by Jordanian soldiers when he attempted to cross the border and enter Israel illegally.

Perera lived in Thumba, Kerala and had arrived in Jordan on a visitor visa. He was shot dead on February 10.

On Sunday, the Indian Embassy in Jordan said that it had been informed about the “sad demise of an Indian national in unfortunate circumstances."

“The Embassy is in touch with the family of the deceased and is working closely with Jordanian authorities for transportation of mortal remains of the deceased," the Embassy posted on X.

47-year-old Perera made an attempt to enter Israel illegally after reaching Jordan on a visitor visa.

Along with Perera, his relative Edison had also tried to cross the border. He was also shot, but he survived and was repatriated to India after receiving medical aid. Edison was a resident of Menamkulam.

The family members of Gabriel said that they were informed about his death by the Indian Embassy in Jordan.

They said that they were aware of his Jordan trip but did not have any idea that he had tried to cross illegally into Israel.

Speaking to ANI, the wife of Periera said, “Last time I received a call, he only spoke to me for 2 minutes. He just asked me to pray for him."

According to a local panchayat representative, Gabriel used to drive an autorickshaw before going to Jordan.

In the e-mail sent to his family, the authorities said that Edison and Gabriel had attempted to cross illegally the Jordan border in the Karak district.

“The security forces tried to stop them but they did not listen to the warning, the guards opened fire on them. One bullet hit Thomas in his head and he passed away at the spot. Later his body was sent to the local hospital. Officials of the embassy will be visiting the hospital to verify the identity of Thomas where the mortal remains are kept," said the email.

The family has requested the Indian authorities to help them bring back home the remains of Gabriel.
