An Indian man, who was serving in a Russian mercenary unit has been killed in the ongoing war with the Ukraine, while his relative has sustained serious injuries.

The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Binil T B, a native of Wadakkanchery in Kerala’s Thrissur district.

Binil died while fighting on the frontlines of the country’s war with Ukraine, NoRKA (Non-Resident Keralites Affairs Department) said and communicated to the Thrissur district administration.

As per the report, a few days ago, Binil’s family received a message that the two men were injured in an attack from a drone, but they could not establish contact with them.

“Binil’s wife Joicy, who has been in touch with the Indian Embassy in Moscow, got the information. When she called officials, they verbally confirmed that Binil had died. The officials said they had information in this regard from the Russian Army," Saneesh, a relative of the two men told the news outlet.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy has informed that 27-year-old Jain T K, who was injured in the attack, is currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Moscow.

For the last few months, Binil and Jain were desperately trying to get home.

In August last year, another person from Thrissur, Sandeep Chandran (36) from Kallur Nayrangi was killed in Ukraine in a shell attack while fighting alongside a Russian military unit.

Dozens of Indians have reportedly been duped by agents into fighting for Russian forces with the lure of money and a Russian passport.

In May last year, the police arrested four people allegedly linked to a network of human traffickers on suspicion of luring young men to Russia with the promise of jobs or education, only to force them to fight in Ukraine.

The Ministry of External Affairs in August 2024 revealed that eight Indians were killed while serving in the Russian armed forces since the war began in 2022.
