A Delta Air Lines flight and a United Airlines flight “landed safely" after experiencing “a loss of required separation" while heading to Phoenix airport, as per a statement from the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Saturday.

The statement mentioned that both flight crews received “onboard alerts" about their aircraft being too close, and air traffic control issued “corrective instructions" to the crews. The incident, which took place around 11 a.m. local time over the weekend, is under investigation by the agency.

Videos released on X by Flightradar 24 showed in an interactive map how a United Airlines 737 and Delta Air Lines A330 came very close to colliding with each other while approaching Nebraska’s Phoenix airport.

The aircraft were on conflicting paths and TCAS alerted both crews. United climbed while Delta descended and the conflict was resolved.

Justin Giddens, a resident of Phoenix, who was out on a walk, was a witness of the incident. He shot the video with his camera. The video, shared by local news outlets ABC15 Arizona and azfamily 3TV CBS 5, showed the two flights separated by a few hundred metres.

The two flights at one point of time were 371 metres apart horizontally and 267 metres apart vertically.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it is looking into the near-midair collision between flights approaching Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

In a statement, United said that as one of their flights was preparing to land at Phoenix on Saturday, its pilots received an automated flight deck warning to adjust their altitude.

“The pilots acted immediately and landed safely. We’re working with the FAA on its investigation," the United statement said.

“Delta flight crews extensively train to handle uncommon scenarios such as this and follow the resolution advisory as directed," a statement from Delta Airlines told The Hill.
