Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday exuded confidence as he said the NDA government will win the upcoming Bihar assembly elections with the largest mandate to date.

“The NDA will make a comeback with record numbers. It will form the government with the largest mandate to date, there are no two opinions about that," he said on Day 2 of the Rising Bharat Summit 2025.

Shah, however, was evasive when asked if Nitish Kumar will once again be the chief minister if the NDA wins and said the election is being fought under his leadership. On the seat-sharing pact with the Janata Dal (United), he said the state leaders of both the parties will sit and decide on it.

He further spoke about “voter regret", which led to the BJP bouncing back in Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi despite major losses in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

On the ‘400 paar’ slogan by the BJP before the general elections, he said: “We also agree that we won fewer seats, those are the figures. Tell me, whenever a team goes out for a match, do they go with the expectation of losing? We were at 300, so we said ‘400 paar’. What was so wrong about that? I still say that we’ll win Tamil Nadu and Bihar, and they (the opposition) will be wiped out."

On the BJP’s sweeping victories in Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi, the home minister said after the Lok Sabha performance, people felt they had not done justice to Modi and corrected that by giving the party big mandates.

“During the Lok Sabha elections, people were affected by lies and falsehoods and it did have an impact. We got fewer votes when the results came out and we felt that we hadn’t done justice to Modi ji. Because of that, the BJP has got a bigger mandate in state elections giving the PM’s work higher validation," he said.

Shah was asked about the BJP’s plan for the Punjab polls, which are set to be held early in 2027, and if the party will fight with former ally Shiromani Akali Dal. To this, he said not even the Almighty can predict what will happen in Punjab in the next election.

“Even Brahma, the creator, will not be able to predict what happens in the next Punjab election. There’s such a mess over there, but by the time the polls come around, the public will choose and give a strong mandate for government formation," he added.
