Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday caused a stir after comparing terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack with Members of Parliament (MPs) representing India’s anti-terror message on the global stage.

Ramesh made the comment while criticising the central government, and has drawn sharp reactions from leaders across political parties.

Speaking about a possible special session of Parliament on June 25–26 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, he suggested that the move was aimed at distracting the public from more pressing national concerns. In doing so, he reportedly said, “Our MPs are roaming, and terrorists are also roaming."

“These terrorists of Pahalgam were involved in four attacks and still they are roaming around here and there. Our MPs are roaming and terrorists are also roaming," the Congress leader had stated.

The comment drew strong reactions from political leader from the BJP as well as other parties.

JD(U) leader KC Tyagi criticised Ramesh for undermining the Indian Armed Forces’ success in ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched after the Pahalgam attack.

He said, “What is he trying to achieve by making such statements, especially when all-party delegations are united in conveying India’s stance against terrorism? June 25 marks a dark chapter in India’s history, when top leaders were jailed without any valid legal grounds. There was neither press freedom nor public liberty. There is nothing wrong in acknowledging and revealing the truth about that day."

BJP leader and former union minister Anurag Thakur condemned Ramesh’s remarks, calling them “an insult to national pride."

“What a new low the Congress has stooped to equating our respected Members of Parliament, who are on a global mission to expose Pakistan’s role in promoting terrorism, with the very terrorists trained and supported by Pakistan itself is an insult to our national pride," Thakur stated.

He accused Congress of demoralising security forces and attacking MPs on a global mission to expose Pakistan’s support for terrorism. “They first tried to demoralise our brave security forces, cast doubt on their valour and achievements during Operation Sindoor, and now they are attacking and attempting to disrupt all such MPs who are on a global mission to raise India’s voice against terrorism."

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia called Ramesh’s comments as “highly condemnable and worrying," accusing the Congress of trying to weaken India’s strong measures against terrorism since Operation Sindoor.

“It is shameful for the entire nation that an Indian leader would draw a comparison between our MPs and terrorists. Since the success of ‘Operation Sindoor’, it seems that Congress and Rahul Gandhi have been trying to weaken the strong measures taken by PM Modi. This statement is yet another attempt in that direction," Bhatia stated.
