Russia will not discuss proposals of foreign military intervention in Ukraine in any format, the country’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova rebutted to the plans of the European Union to potentially send troops to Ukraine.

Her remarks came at a press briefing on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum.

“Russia does not intend to discuss the completely unacceptable and undermining any security foreign intervention in Ukraine in any form, in any format whatsoever," the diplomat said, Russian news agency TASS reported.

She said that the security guarantees demanded by Ukraine are “guarantees of threat" to Europe and are “absolutely unacceptable".

“They are aimed at preserving Ukraine as a stronghold for terror, for provocations against our country. They are not security guarantees for Ukraine, they are guarantees of threat to the European continent," she said.

The spokeswoman said that the approval by the United States of the possible sale of over 3,000 ERAM missiles and the equipment required for them was a contradiction of calls for the settlement of the conflict diplomatically.

Her remarks came ahead of a meeting hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron of the Coalition of the Willing – a grouping of allies who vowed to enforce a peace deal in Ukraine.

A source at the Élysée – official residence of the President of France – told BBC that the group was ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine and was only waiting for the US nod that it would act as the final guarantor.

The proposed deal also included continuing military training and supplying weapons to Ukraine’s army. It also proposes that the European troops will be deployed in Ukraine to deter Russia from any future aggression, BBC reported, citing sources.

However, such a deployment would require a ceasefire, the onus of which “falls to the Americans who are negotiating with the Russians", the report said.

For now, several coalition members, including Italy and Germany, have ruled out sending soldiers to Ukraine, as the priority was getting Russia to agree to a ceasefire, a German government spokesperson told the BBC.

Vladimir Putin mocked the idea of meeting his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “I have never ruled out the possibility of such a meeting. But is there any point? Let’s see," Putin said in Beijing.

Earlier in March this year, the UK and France floated the idea of constituting a coalition of the willing to enforce a peace deal in Ukraine at the London Summit.

British Prim Minister Keir Starmer had described the coalition as a group of nations “ready to support Ukraine with troops on the ground and planes in the air, working with others".
