US President Donald Trump on Wednesday dismissed the escalating political furore related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein files a “Democrat hoax", and said they should instead be talking about him “ending seven wars" across the world.
His remarks came as he spoke at the White House, near where a crowd, mostly survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse, made their voices heard, pressuring lawmakers to force the release of the sex trafficking investigation into the late financier.
“This is a Democrat hoax that never ends," Trump said as he responded to a question on survivors of Jeffrey Epstein calling for the case files to be released.
“From what I understand, thousands of pages of documents have been given, but it’s really a Democrat hoax, because they are trying to get people to talk about something that’s totally irrelevant to the success that we have had as a nation since I’ve been the President," Trump said.
“Even if you look at (Washington) DC now, DC is a totally safe zone. You can walk down the street now and nothing’s gonna happen, no crimes, no murders, no nothing," he said.
“We have a lot of problems with certain places, and we still do, all run by Democrats," the US President added.
“So, what they are trying to do with the Epstein hoax is get people to talk about that, instead of speaking about the tremendous success like ending seven wars. I ended seven wars, nobody is gonna talk about it, cause they’re gonna talk about the Epstein, whatever," he asserted.
“I understand that we’ve given thousands of pages of files, and I know that no matter what you do, it’s gonna keep going. I think it’s enough because we should talk about the greatness of our country and the success that we’re having," Trump said.
“I think we’re probably having, according to what I read from even two people in this room, we’re having the most successful eight months of any President, ever, and that’s what I wanna talk about, that’s what we should be talking about, not the Epstein hoax," the US President said.
During the news conference on the Capitol lawn that drew hundreds of supporters and chants of “release the files," the women shared, some publicly for the first time, how they were lured into Epstein’s abuse by his former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell.
They demanded that the Trump administration provide transparency and accountability for what they endured as teenagers.
Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial in 2019 on charges that said he sexually abused and trafficked dozens of underage girls.
The case was brought more than a decade after he secretly cut a deal with federal prosecutors in Florida to dispose of nearly identical allegations.
Epstein was accused of paying underage girls hundreds of dollars in cash for massages and then molesting them.
Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime confidant and former girlfriend, was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in prison for luring teenage girls for him to abuse.
Four women testified at her trial that they were abused by Epstein as teens in the 1990s and early 2000s at his homes in Florida, New York and New Mexico.
The allegations have spawned dozens of lawsuits.
