Billionaire Elon Musk has once again leaned into his long-running extraterrestrial persona, quipping that he possesses official documentation confirming his alien identity.

“I keep telling people I’m an alien, but nobody believes me," the Tesla chief said. “I mean, when I got my green card, it said ‘alien registration’ part. So I mean, you know, I have proof from the government."

Musk’s tongue-in-cheek remark drew laughter across social media, reigniting one of the internet’s favourite memes: that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO is not from Earth but from a far more advanced civilisation.

Speaking about his decision to create OpenAI, he said that his concerns about artificial intelligence, and what he describes as Larry Page’s lack of concern, ultimately pushed him to set up the organisation.

“The reason I founded OpenAI was because I was concerned, based on my conversations with Larry Page, who used to be a close friend of mine, that he was not sufficiently concerned about the dangers of AI," Musk said.

According to Musk, a turning point came during his birthday party, when Page publicly called him a “speciesist" for prioritising humans over machines. “I found that troubling," Musk said. “I was like, ‘Larry, what side are you on? It sounds like you’re on the side of the computers, but you really need to be on Team Humanity here.’"

Musk said the exchange convinced him that “we’ve got to have some counterbalance to Google, because Larry doesn’t seem to care if humans make it or not."

He added that this thinking led directly to the formation of OpenAI. “I thought, what’s the opposite of Google? It would be an open-source nonprofit. And that’s where the word ‘open’ in OpenAI comes from. It means open source."

Musk said he initially funded the organization himself, comparing his contributions to “one of the Series A–B–C rounds," and claimed he recruited “the key people, like Ilya Sutskever," and “taught them everything I know." He also said he secured the group’s early arrangement with Microsoft, describing it as “a deal… to donate some time from Azure."

Musk stressed he did not seek compensation for his involvement. “For all that, I did not seek any natural reward whatsoever," he said, adding that he declined an offer of equity. “The reason I actually turned down the offer for shares is because I felt like… what would the shares even be in? Nonprofits aren’t supposed to have shares, at least last time I checked. I turned down the offer of shares, because it didn’t seem morally or legally defensible."
