One person was killed and 23 others injured in Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv, and the northeastern city of Kharkiv in the overnight Russian strikes, said authorities early on Saturday.
The attack took place a day after negotiators from Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington met for their trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi and agreed to continue talks over the weekend.
The country remained under an air raid alert during the attack as the military authorities in Kyiv warned of incoming drones and ballistic missiles.
“Kyiv is under a massive enemy attack. Do not leave shelters! Currently, one person is known to have died and four to have been wounded," posted Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Telegram, adding that various non-residential buildings had been hit.
He further said that three of those injured had been hospitalised. He stated that several buildings caught fire after being hit by drone debris, while heat and water services in parts of the capital were interrupted.
The head of the regional military authority said that four people were also injured in the wider Kyiv region.
Head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, reported strikes in at least four districts. A medical facility also suffered damage in the attack.
In Kharkiv, Mayor Igor Terekhov said that several residential buildings were damaged in the attack by Iranian-made Shahed drones near the Russian border.
He added that 25 drones had hit several districts over 2-1/2 hours, with at least 11 people injured. Terekhov added that the drones had struck a maternity hospital, a dormitory for displaced people, and a hospital.
Zelenskyy Calls For ‘Strong Response’ To Russian Attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reacting to the Russian attacks, said that the main targets were energy facilities.
“Tragically, this attack has claimed the life of one person. My condolences to their family and loved ones. All necessary services are now working at the sites of the Russian strikes, eliminating all consequences: rescuers, medical teams, municipal services, energy workers, and repair crews," he said.
Overnight, Russia carried out a massive attack on our regions, launching over 370 attack drones and 21 missiles of various types. He added that such a Russian strike on Ukrainian energy infrastructure proves that the supply of air defences should not be delayed. “No blind eye can be turned to these strikes; they must be met with a strong response," he said.
Russia, Ukraine Hold Joint Peace Talks With US, Zelenskyy Says ‘Too Early’ To Draw Conclusions
The Russian strikes came a day after negotiators from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States held their first trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi, since the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion nearly four years ago.
The leaders held direct talks on the plans being pushed by US President Donald Trump to end the ongoing war.
After the meeting, Zelenskyy said that it was “too early" to draw conclusions from Friday’s talks. “We will see how the talks go tomorrow and what the results will be," he added.
He further said that the “main thing" in the talks is for Russia to be willing to end the war. “Ukraine’s position is clear. I have defined the framework for dialogue for our delegation," he said.
