Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought to reassure Moscow that Islamabad’s outreach to Russia would not clash with Russia’s long-standing ties with India, calling the relationship “supplementary and complementary" for regional stability. Shehbaz Sharif met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin where he thanked Moscow for its support to Pakistan and hailed Russia’s attempt at maintaining equilibrium in South Asia.

“I would like to thank you for supporting Pakistan and trying to have a balancing act in the region," Shehbaz Sharif told Vladimir Putin, adding, “I know and I must say that I respect your relationship with India and it is perfectly fine, but we also want to build strong relations and these relations will be supplementary and complementary for the betterment of the region."

Shehbaz Sharif’s Viral Moment From SCO

Earlier, a brief scene during the SCO summit drew attention online when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin were seen walking together in animated conversation, while Shehbaz Sharif, standing nearby, looked on. The moment, captured on video, was widely circulated on social media.

This year’s SCO summit in Tianjin was the largest since the grouping’s founding in 2001, with China- the current chair- inviting 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organisations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his banquet address, emphasised that the SCO bore “greater responsibilities in safeguarding regional peace and stability" amid global uncertainty. He urged member states to pool the strength of the Global South and push for “more progress of human civilisation."
