Sajeeb Wazed on Wednesday accused Bangladesh interim government’s chief advisor and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus and the interim administration of manipulating Bangladesh’s restored caretaker government system to engineer a “rigged" election that sidelines the Awami League. In a Facebook post, the son of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina said the Supreme Court’s decision to bring back the caretaker model in a ruling on Thursday only after the upcoming polls was a “sham judgement" designed to legitimise an “unelected, unconstitutional and illegal regime."
His remarks came shortly after the Supreme Court overturned its 14-year-old verdict that had annulled the 13th Amendment, which had introduced the caretaker system. In a unanimous decision, the Appellate Division allowed the appeals and review petitions filed against its earlier ruling, calling that judgment “manifestly flawed on multiple counts" and saying it now stands “entirely invalidated." The Court said the constitutional provisions establishing a non-partisan caretaker government have been revived but will apply only to elections held in the future.
