A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing widespread damage and tremors in Thailand. An under-construction skyscraper collapsed in Bangkok, trapping 43 people.

Moments after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on Friday, videos on social media showed chaos on streets as people ran for their lives.

The earthquake, which was also followed by another aftershock of 6.4 magnitude, sent down an under-construction skyscraper in Bangkok rumbling down.

As many as 43 people were reportedly trapped under the rubble of the collapsed structure.

Another video of a building showed how water from a swimming pool came oozing down a highrise in Bangkok as buildings swayed due to the effect of the earthquake in Myanmar.

The powerful earthquake in Myanmar buckled roads in the capital Naypyidaw and with tremors felt in China and Thailand, AFP reported.

The tremor’s epicentre was located 16 kilometres (10 miles) northwest of the city of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometres around 12:50 pm local time (0620 GMT), the USGS said.

Some metro and light rail services were suspended in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok, residents ran into the streets as buildings shook.
