Passengers aboard a Batik Air flight to Bangkok were thrown into panic when a power bank caught fire, filling the cabin with smoke.

The incident happened on February 24, while the flight was en route from Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to Bangkok, Thailand. The plane was just 30 minutes from landing at Don Mueang Airport when smoke began to spread throughout the cabin, according to The Straits Times.

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the tense moments as smoke billowed from the overhead luggage compartment. Passengers seated nearby can be seen quickly moving away as flight attendants rush to locate the source of the smoke.

The footage also shows the crew using an extinguisher to tackle the fire, eventually opening the overhead compartment completely to reveal thick white smoke. Passengers were then assisted in removing their belongings.

A man, believed to be the owner of the power bank, is seen retrieving a black bag before being escorted to the back of the plane by a crew member.

Batik Air has yet to comment on the incident, and it remains unclear what caused the power bank to catch fire.

The incident highlights the dangers of carrying lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly found in power banks and phone batteries. These batteries are fragile and prone to swelling, making them susceptible to catching fire if damaged or exposed to high heat.

This is not the first time a power bank has caused a fire aboard a commercial flight. In response to such incidents, earlier in February, South Korean carrier Air Busan had announced a ban on storing power banks in overhead compartments, following a similar incident on January 28, when one of its planes caught fire.
