New York City and much of the Northeast are bracing for a historic winter storm, as meteorologists warn that a powerful blizzard could blanket the region in feet of snow, disrupt travel, and create life-threatening conditions. The city has issued a blizzard warning for the first time in nearly ten years, underscoring the severity of the approaching storm.

Snow is forecast to begin Sunday afternoon, and projections have continued to climb, making this storm one of the most significant snow threats in years for major Northeast cities including New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia.

A Blizzard Warning will take effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for New York City, Long Island, and the New Jersey Shore, as forecasters warn of a potentially high-impact winter storm, FOX Weather reported.

How’s Blizzard Different From An Ordinary Snowstorm?

It’s the first Blizzard Warning for New York City in nearly a decade, since 2017. The Big Apple is forecast to get between 12-18 inches of snow from Sunday into Monday.

Blizzard conditions are defined by falling or blowing snow, wind gusts of at least 35 mph, and visibility reduced to under a quarter mile for three consecutive hours. During this storm, gusts could reach 50 mph in New York City.

The powerful combination of heavy snow and strong winds is expected to create extremely dangerous travel conditions.

The New York City Emergency Management urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, dress warmly if they must go outside, and stay indoors as much as possible. Power outages are possible across Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, Long Island, and parts of New Jersey.

New York City and areas westward will see an end to the snow during the day on Monday. Snow will continue to impact Long Island up through Maine through Monday night.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, snow will be over for everyone in the Northeast, by Tuesday morning.
