Russia launched an air attack on Kyiv early Monday, prompting Ukraine’s air defence systems to respond, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. He urged residents to remain in shelters as explosions were reported across the capital.

“Air defence forces are operating in the capital. Stay in shelters!" Klitschko said in a message on the Telegram app.

Hi from Kyiv hallway. It’s 2:37 am and Russia just attacked Kyiv with ballistic missile, heard very loud explosion, doors were shaking, which means it’s close enough for sound blast wave to reach us, before it heard rounds of explosions a bit smaller and air defense work pic.twitter.com/FJtWmCwmlS— Margo Gontar 🔱 (@MargoGontar) January 5, 2026
