Congress veteran Sam Pitroda has claimed that during his address at IIT Roorkee via a video call, “a hacker infiltrated the video link and began streaming explicit, inappropriate content".
According to the Congress leader, the incident occurred during the Cognizant event held at IIT Roorkee on February 1, 2025. He had joined the gathering of students and teachers via Zoom call.
“Unfortunately, just minutes after my speech, a hacker infiltrated the video link and began streaming explicit, inappropriate content. We immediately shut down the video and ended the event," Pitroda said.
He added, “It’s deeply disturbing that such incidents occur, especially in academic spaces meant for learning and growth."
The Congress leader said that cyber security remains a critical concern, and this serves as a “stark reminder of the importance of digital safety and vigilance".
The fresh claim comes amid the ongoing controversy over Sam Pitroda’s statement on ‘IIT Ranchi lecture disruption’. The Congress leader had shared a video of a podcast on his X account on February 22.
In the clip — a discussion on the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi today — Pitroda was speaking about the importance of freedom of speech in a democracy, and said, “Recently I was speaking at Ranchi IIT to several hundred students… and someone hacked in and started showing pornography."
His comments were later fact-checked by the Centre, with the Education Ministry putting out a sharp statement. The ministry pointing out there is no IIT in the Jharkhand capital. There is an Indian Institute of Information Technology, the ministry said.
