Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: The benchmark indices ended lower after failing to hold their opening gains, with the Sensex falling 172 points to 77,369 and the Nifty declining 33 points to 24,219.

Financials remained a major drag, with the Nifty Bank slipping 236 points to 57,526, while the Midcap index gained 82 points to 63,817; metal stocks supported the Nifty, which managed to hold above 24,200.

Twenty Nifty stocks closed higher, with Hindalco, JSW Steel and DRL among the top gainers. SBI Life, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and Tata Motors PV were among the top Nifty losers, while most PSU banks ended lower, led by Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank.

Among individual stocks, Vishal Mega Mart surged 10% after its CEO was reappointed for five years. Gold financiers, including Muthoot and Manappuram, gained 2–6% as gold prices rose. Urban Company surged 6% following another positive brokerage note, while BLS slid 11% as the Schengen visa probe widened; the company refuted the allegation.

Shanti Gears extended gains, rising 50% in two days after the promoter raised its stake. Sugar stocks saw profit booking, with Balrampur down 5%, while defence stocks ended mixed, with Cochin Shipyard rising and HAL falling. Indian Hotels rose 2% after it said it would merge Oriental Hotels with itself, lifting Oriental Hotels shares.
