Stock Market Highlights: The markets remained under pressure through the session and ended at a 1-week low, with the breadth firmly in favour of declines. After starting on a strong note, the indices gave up their gains and slipped below key levels, with the Nifty ending below 24,100.
The Sensex fell 539 points to 76,933, while the Nifty declined 117 points to 24,091. The Nifty Bank slipped 274 points to 57,510, while the Midcap index fell 66 points to 64,035.
HDFC Bank dragged the Nifty and Nifty Bank, ending at a 4-year low. Hindalco was the top Nifty loser, tracking metal prices, while auto stocks also ended largely in the red, with M&M among the top losers. Shriram Finance extended losses to close 1.5% lower.
Bharti Airtel fell 1% as Singtel's comments on its holding weighed on the stock. On the upside, Adani Enterprises ended 2% higher after reacting to a positive brokerage note, while Kotak Mahindra Bank built on Wednesday's gains and was up 5% for the week.
Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance fell 4-5%, while jewellery stocks gained on reports of a customs duty cut. CONCOR slid over 4% after a sharp fall in the last hour. Tata Power ended 3% lower after losing an arbitration case.
BHEL gained over 4% on healthy volumes, while equipment stocks rose following a US government order, with CG Power gaining 4%.
