New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday spoke on Iran and the Middle East situation, criticising the Iranian government’s repression while warning against the consequences of regime-change wars in the region.

“The Iranian government has engaged in systematic repression of its own people, even killing thousands of Iranians who were seeking to express the most basic forms of dissent earlier this year. It is a brutal government," Mamdani said.

“I’ve also said that while I may be a young mayor, I am old enough to remember the devastating consequences of our country pursuing a war with the intent of regime change in that very same region not that many years ago," he added.

Earlier on Sunday, Mamdani faced outrage from Iranians who blasted at him over his response to the military strikes on Iran.

“Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war. Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace," Mamdani wrote in a post on X.

“I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe. I have been in contact with our Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution," he added.

Responding to Mamdani’s post, several Iranians criticised him and termed him as a “human garbage".

On February 28, Israel and the United States in a joint operation, attacked Iran, targeting many cities, including the capital, Tehran. Over 700 people have been killed in the strikes so far in Iran.

Hours after the joint strikes, Iran, in retaliation, launched missiles – many of which hit Gulf regions including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Bahrain.

Since February 28, tensions in the Middle East have been escalating as Iran vowed to avenge the killing of its Supreme Leader Khamenei, and US President Donald Trump warned it was “too late" for Iran to seek talks to “escape a war".
