Taliban has claimed to capture the Torkham border, forcing the Pakistani army to flee due to heavy fire and casualties.

Top Taliban sources told CNN-News18 that tensions at Torkham have escalated recently due to Pakistan and two days ago, firing started between Pakistani and Afghan forces at the crossing that was closed for over a week due to a dispute over Afghanistan’s construction of a new border post.

Afghan forces have reportedly built new structures like border posts and bunkers, a move that Pakistan labelled a violation of previous agreements, given that it considers the area its own territory. Irate Pakistani forces closed the crossing, disrupting trade and daily life.

Due to the standoff, trade activities at the Torkham border have been suspended, with export vehicles stationed at Zero Point being sent back.

“Pakistan is wrongly accusing us of sending terrorists. The economic impact of the border closure is more painful for Pakistan and they are losing huge money on a daily basis," the sources said.

Pakistan and Afghanistan forces regularly exchange fire, often sparked by disagreements over construction near the Durand line, a 2,400-kilometre (1,500-mile) frontier drawn by the British in 1896 and disputed by Kabul.
