Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) is adopting Tata.Cars as its new customer-facing identity, Managing Director and CEO Shailesh Chandra said.
The change means customers will increasingly see the Tata.Cars name across dealerships, showrooms and marketing. The company's legal identity, however, isn't changing — Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles will continue to be the registered corporate entity.
The rebranding comes as Tata Motors looks to sharpen the identity of its passenger-vehicle business, which spans both conventional and electric cars.
Tata looks back at an EV bet made before the market was ready
Chandra also reflected on Tata Motors' early push into electric vehicles, saying the company decided to make the bet at a time when EVs were barely part of the mainstream conversation in India.
Neither customers nor the broader ecosystem were ready when the company began its EV journey, he said. Consumer awareness was limited, scepticism about electric cars was widespread and India's supplier and charging networks were still at an early stage.
That left the industry facing a familiar chicken-and-egg problem: consumers were reluctant to buy EVs without adequate charging infrastructure, while companies had little incentive to build charging networks without enough EVs on the road.
Tata Motors sought to break that cycle by drawing on other companies within the Tata Group.
Chandra said the EV ecosystem was built with support from Tata Power, Tata AutoComp, Tata Technologies, Tata Elxsi and TCS, bringing together capabilities ranging from charging infrastructure and components to engineering and technology.
The company also saw its EV push as aligned with India's broader goals of reducing air pollution and dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Tata Motors has since emerged as one of the early leaders in India's electric passenger-vehicle market, even as competition has intensified with more automakers launching EVs.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles shares closed 0.86% higher at ₹315.80 on Thursday, August 27.
