The political temperature in West Bengal soared after an audio clip allegedly featuring Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal went viral. In the clip, a man— believed to be Mondal — is heard hurling abuses and threats at the Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of Bolpur Police Station, even dragging the officer’s wife and daughter into the tirade.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar was the first to post the audio on X, commenting: “His position within the party has weakened, which is why this case has been allowed to proceed. It’s not the first time Mondal has abused police officers."

BJP leader Amit Malviya also posted, condemning the alleged threats: “A TMC leader, under the very nose of a woman Chief Minister, threatens a police officer with the rape of his mother and wife. This is the real face of TMC — emboldened, lawless, and shameless. If this is how they treat a police officer, imagine the plight of ordinary citizens. This proves that women are not safe in West Bengal under TMC’s rule."
The TMC, attempting damage control, responded swiftly. Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said the party would act if Mondal had indeed crossed the line. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) issued a statement demanding an apology from Mondal within four hours, failing which a show-cause notice would be served.
Meanwhile, though Mondal hasnot reacted to the, the TMC leader on Thursday alleged that the IC takes bribes and that he has complained to the SP and DIG over the same.
Legal Heat: FIR Filed Against Mondal in Bolpur
The audio has triggered embarrassment within both the TMC and the state administration. Following the viral spread of the clip, the police registered a case under Sections 224, 132, 75, and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including two non-bailable charges.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Birbhum, Amandeep, confirmed the development, stating: “The IC of Bolpur has lodged a complaint against Anubrata Mondal for abusing him over the phone. A case has been registered, and strong legal action will follow."
Police sources told News18 that a notice is expected to be served to Mondal today itself.
A Declining Power Centre in Birbhum
This incident is not the first time Mondal has been accused of intimidating the police. For years, he was seen as the undisputed power centre of Birbhum. Before his arrest in connection with a cattle smuggling case, he once sparked controversy by instructing his supporters to hurl bombs at the police.
After spending an extended period in Tihar Jail, Mondal’s return to Birbhum politics has been lackluster. Party insiders and locals report that his former political stronghold has weakened. During his imprisonment, the TMC operated the Birbhum unit through a core committee, and local leader Kajal Sheikh — often considered a rival — gained influence in the district.
Although Mondal has long been seen as close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, recent developments suggest a shift in internal dynamics. Just two weeks ago, during a party reorganisation, Mondal was removed from his position as Birbhum district president — signaling a significant political setback.
Experts believe there are three main reasons behind the swift action against Mondal:
The Language Used: The audio allegedly featuring Mondal is so offensive and damaging that both the party and the administration were compelled to respond to save face.
Message of Accountability: The party sought to convey that it does not condone such behaviour, regardless of the leader’s stature.
Diminished Political Clout: Mondal’s influence in Birbhum has visibly declined. The party, no longer seeing him as an asset, appears unwilling to bear the burden of his controversies.
Party sources also indicate growing internal dissatisfaction with Mondal’s monopolistic style of functioning in Birbhum, which may have contributed to the decision to distance the organisation from him.
