In his first public remarks on the Murshidabad riots, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee’s “nirmam sarkaar" (merciless government) and said that the Trinamool Congress corporator was involved in earmarking homes of people to be torched.
His remarks came weeks after communal violence erupted in Samserganj and Dhulian areas of Murshidabad on April 11 and 12 against the Waqf Amendment Act. Three people died in the riots while several others were injured.
PM Modi’s Political Rally In Bengal
Attacking the Mamata government at a political rally in West Bengal’s Alipurduar, the Prime Minister said that the state government allowed hooliganism in the name of appeasement.
“Whatever happened in Murshidabad and Malda was an example of the government’s ruthlessness here… In the name of appeasement, hooliganism was given a free hand. Imagine the horrific situation when the people of a party running the government identify and burn people’s houses, and the police act as mere spectators," he said.

With the Assembly elections less than a year away, PM Modi said that the people of the state no longer have faith in the TMC government and unveiled a slogan against Mamata.
“I ask the poor people of Bengal, is this how a government runs?… Here, the court has to intervene on every issue. Otherwise, nothing gets resolved. The people of Bengal do not trust the TMC government anymore… ‘Bengal mein machi cheekh pukaar, nahi chahiye nirmam sarkar’," he said.
Murshidabad Riots Fact-Finding Panel Report
According to a fact-finding committee, which submitted its report to the Calcutta High Court this month, the victims told the members that the TMC leaders were present at the site of the violence.
The report further said that the attacks were directed by the local councillor Mehboob Alam, adding that the local police were “completely inactive and absent".
The West Bengal Police did not respond to calls by the locals, the report further said.
