Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh on Monday reacted to Justin Trudeau’s announcement to step down from the post of Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader. Criticising Trudeau on handling of key issues, including healthcare and housing, Singh said that the Prime Minister has let down the Canadians.

Once a Justin Trudeau ally, the NDP leader has accused Trudeau of failing Canadians, vowing to end the Liberal government’s reign and trigger fresh elections.

“Justin Trudeau has let you down, over and over. He let you down on the cost of housing and groceries. He let you down on fixing health care. It doesn’t matter who leads the Liberals. They don’t deserve another chance," he said in a statement as shared on X.

Singh further took a dig at the Conservative Party and accused it of prioritising corporate interests.

“Conservatives are jumping at the opportunity to take from you and give more to CEOs. You will pay the price of Poilievre’s cuts. If you oppose callous Conservative cuts; if you oppose the rich getting richer while everyone else falls further behind – stand with the NDP this time. You can have a government that works for you for a change," he added.

Singh’s Rift With Trudeau

Singh’s NDP played a crucial role in destabilising the Trudeau’s minority government by supporting key legislation. Additionally, their cooperation agreement unraveled in September 2024, as Singh accused Trudeau of failing to address critical issues like affordable housing, healthcare, and the rising cost of living.

Earlier, his dissent ally had announced to introduce a no-confidence motion saying that Trudeau’s leadership has faltered amid internal party turmoil, high-profile resignations, and growing economic uncertainty.

Jagmeet Singh earlier said that Justin Trudeau was undeserving of “another chance" owing to which “the NDP will vote to bring this government down and give Canadians a chance to vote for a government who will work for them."

Singh at several occasions had demanded Trudeau to step down saying that Canada needs a Prime Minister who will fight for the people. A top NDP official recently said the party is willing to defeat the Liberals in a confidence vote if Trudeau does not resign by February or March 2025.

Trudeau Announces Resignation

Justin Trudeau on Monday resigned from his role as Canadian PM and chief of the Canadian Liberal Party. The development comes amid growing dissent within the Liberal Party while his popularity has waned in recent months, with his government narrowly surviving a series of no-confidence votes and critics calling for his resignation.

He held a press conference today outside his residence at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.

“I have informed my party and the Governor that I intend to resign as leader of the party as well as prime minister of Canada, and will do so as soon as my successor is appointed through a robust nationwide competitive process," Trudeau said.

In his resignation speech, Trudeau also hit out at the leader of Canada’s opposition Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre. “Stopping the fight against climate change does not make sense and backing off on the values and strengths on diversity is not the right path," he said, adding that “Pierre Poilievre’s vision for Canada is not the right one."

Trudeau has become widely unpopular in Canada owing to rising inflation, a cost of living problem, a housing crisis, and record immigration that has frustrated Canadians. He is also facing strained relations with India and the United States.
