US President Donald Trump on Tuesday targeted European leaders for spending more money on buying Russian energy than on providing aid to Ukraine, implying Europe's double standards.

Trump's remarks came after European leaders rallied behind Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following his public fallout with Trump at the White House last week.

Even as US allies in Europe urged Trump to do more for Ukraine, the US President took to Truth Social and said: “Europe has spent more money buying Russian Oil and Gas than they have spent on defending Ukraine —BY FAR!”

According to the latest study by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), the European Union (EU) countries had spent around USD 23 billion on buying Russian energy in 2024, compared to sending USD 19.6 billion in aid to Ukraine during the same period.

Even as the war raged on, the EU nations witnessed only 1 per cent drop in their purchase of Russian fuel in 2024 (year-on-year).
