US President Donald Trump faced an awkward moment while attempting to read an oath for military personnel amidst boos at the Washington Commanders’ game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Northwest Stadium in Maryland’s Landover. Trump made history as the first sitting president in almost fifty years to attend a regular-season NFL game. His presence was part of the NFL’s Salute to Service initiative honouring military veterans.
When the US President appeared on the videoboard during the first half, standing with House Speaker Mike Johnson, he was met with boos from many fans in the stands, though there were some scattered cheers.
The booing resumed when the stadium announcer introduced him at halftime, and Trump appeared visibly uncomfortable as he read an oath for the military amid the ongoing jeers.
Earlier, after landing at Joint Base Andrews and taking a flyover of Northwest Stadium, Trump told reporters he was “a little bit late." He then travelled to the arena in his armoured car.
“We’re gonna have a good game. Things are going along very well. The country’s doing well. The Democrats have to open it up," Trump said, referring to the government shutdown.
This event occurred shortly after the White House suggested it would be “beautiful" to name Washington’s new NFL stadium after Trump, according to the news agency AP. This comment followed an ESPN report indicating that an intermediary had informed the Commanders’ ownership group that the President desired the stadium to bear his name.
“That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible," said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
