The Donald Trump administration announced a Christmas-season incentive offering undocumented immigrants cash payments and paid travel to leave the United States voluntarily, as part of a broader push to accelerate deportations and reduce enforcement costs.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said undocumented migrants who register to self-deport through the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home app by the end of the year will receive a $3,000 stipend- about Rs 2,70,738- along with a free flight out of the country.
“Illegal aliens who sign up to self-deport through the CBP Home app by the end of the year will receive a $3,000 stipend in addition to a free flight home," DHS said, adding that participants would also qualify for forgiveness of civil fines or penalties related to overstaying.
The payment is three times higher than the $1,000 incentive announced by the administration in May. The move is part of a campaign aimed at speeding up removals of illegal migrants while lowering the costs associated with arrests, detention and deportation.
“Self-deportation through the CBP Home app is the best gift that an illegal alien can give themselves and their families this holiday season," the DHS statement said, adding, “It’s a fast, free and easy process."
The department warned that those who did not take advantage of the offer would face enforcement action.
“Those illegal aliens who don’t take advantage of this special offer today have only one alternative: They will be arrested, deported, and they will never be able to return to the United States," it said.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed the warning, urging undocumented migrants to accept what she described as a “gift".
“If they don’t, we will find them, we will arrest them, and they will never return," she said.
According to DHS, about 1.9 million undocumented migrants have voluntarily left the United States, with tens of thousands using the CBP Home app since January 2025.
