In the long list of missing journalists in Bangladesh, another name of a veteran Hindu journalist is added. 71-year-old Bibhuranjan Sarkar left home on Thursday morning and has not returned since.

His family has lodged a general diary (GD) with Ramna Police Station. Sarkar works at Ajker Patrika and contributes opinions and columns to several outlets.

His son, Rit Sarkar, filed the GD after he didn’t return home.

Bibhuranjan Sarkar’s brother posted on Facebook on Friday stating that his brother is missing. “My brother left for the office at 10 a.m., but inquiries at his workplace and among acquaintances revealed that he never arrived. No one has seen him, and he left his mobile phone at home," the post reads.

Several journalists have either been murdered or disappeared ever since Muhammad Yunus took charge of the government after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down and fled the country to India amid a mass uprising.

On World Press Freedom Day 2025, a New Delhi-based Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) released a report mentioning that Muhammad Yunus has targeted 640 journalists in eight months to throttle media freedom.

The report mentioned that the Bangladeshi media had faced systematic and organised repression since the violent ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government. As per the report, criminal cases are filed against 182 journalists, acts of violence against 206 others, denial of accreditation to 167 media professionals, and inquiries initiated against 85 senior journalists by the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, the anti-terror and anti-money laundering arm of the Bangladesh government.

“If these were not enough, journalists in Bangladesh have been sacked instantly on the whims and fancies of the leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement (ADSM), who have emerged as the holy cows in Bangladesh," the RRAG report reads.
