The main train station of the Austrian capital, Vienna was evacuated and the rail traffic was halted over an unspecified threat on Monday, the local police and the country’s national rail company OBB said.

While the police did not specify the kind of threat, tabloid newspaper Heute reported it was a bomb threat.

A series of empty bomb threats were reported in Austria last year, prompting the stations to be vacated, causing train traffic delays.

“A large police operation is underway at Vienna’s main station. After an incoming threat, the station is being evacuated," police said on X.

They urged the public not to undertake a trip to the station, a major rail hub.

The police also informed that other modes of transportation through the station had also been halted. Some other forms of public transport that are present at the station include underground, tram and bus.

“Please leave the building immediately! ALARM," the screens in the main station displayed.

No journey is expected to be possible until at least 6 pm local time, as per Austrian daily Der Standard.
