Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China is ready to work with India to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, enhance trust and properly handle sensitive issues. He made the remarks during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.

Wang also said China was willing to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, maintain the positive momentum in bilateral ties and jointly advance the modernisation processes of both countries. He said Beijing would continue to support India in carrying out its responsibilities as BRICS rotating chair this year and work with New Delhi to promote solid progress in the bloc.

Wang was in New Delhi to attend the BRICS Security Advisers conference. Xinhua said he told Modi that, along with implementing the leaders' consensus, China was ready to work with India to continuously enhance trust, dispel doubts and deal with sensitive issues properly. He also said that, as the two largest developing countries and important members of the Global South, India and China should play an exemplary role in promoting solidarity and self-reliance among Global South countries.

India and China have rolled out a series of measures over the last more than one year to rebuild relations after a sharp downturn following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020 and the military face-off that followed for more than four years. On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, speaking at a media briefing in Beijing, said it was high time for BRICS countries to deepen dialogue and cooperation on security matters, including traditional and non-traditional security threats. Guo quoted Wang as saying at the forum that, amid profound and complex changes in the international landscape, BRICS countries should shoulder their responsibilities to uphold the international order, use BRICS consensus to resolve security problems, take BRICS actions to tackle global challenges and draw on BRICS wisdom to improve governance in emerging sectors.

Guo also said China, which will take over the rotating BRICS chairmanship in 2027, looked forward to working with all BRICS partners to implement the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the four global initiatives, pursuing prosperity through development, safeguarding stability through security, boosting mutual trust through civil exchanges and striving for justice through sound governance. BRICS, originally made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025. The grouping has emerged as an influential platform, representing around 49.5 per cent of the world's population, around 40 per cent of global GDP and around 26 per cent of global trade.
