Username could soon be available for the web client as well.

WhatsApp web version is used by millions but soon the platform could get a new privacy-centric feature for users.

WhatsApp is adding new features to the web client that runs on any web browser for PC users. The company has already made the Meta AI chatbot available on the platform and soon it could have a new privacy option to keep people’s number safe on the messaging app. The new feature is still in the development stage but reliable WhatsApp tipster WaBetaInfo has spotted it being tested with select users recently.

Many people feel that WhatsApp can be too intrusive, especially when people can reach out to them just by using their phone number. This also becomes a problem if anyone has stalkers prowling around them. So bringing usernames to the messaging app is definitely an upgrade from sharing phone numbers, which will soon be available for the WhatsApp web version as well.

WhatsApp Web Username Profiles – How It Might Work

The tipster has shared a screenshot in the post, where you have the option to share username with people to add them on the messaging app instead of using their phone number.

You also have a note which explains the purpose of the feature which reads, ““Your friends and family can contact you on WhatsApp using this username.” This change will ensure you can stop sharing mobile numbers with others who want to add you to their list.

Having said that, usernames tend to be unique so it is likely that WhatsApp will probably give you multiple tries to set up an ID for your account, or maybe suggest a few options itself. The feature is still yet to reach the beta stage so quite possible that WhatsApp doesn’t even bring it to the final release but if the plans go well, we might see the update being pushed out in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp is working on other features as well, one of them being the ability to transcribe the voice messages. The feature will appear below the voice note, as highlighted by the same tipster and a future update could offer you the text version of all the voice messages you send or receive.
