Who was Gholamreza Soleimani? Iran's Basij force commander killed in strike

One of Iran’s most powerful security figures — a man central to its internal crackdown on dissent — has been killed in the country's widening conflict with Israel and the US.

Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Basij militia force for the past six years, was killed in an early Tuesday strike. His death was confirmed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) through the judiciary-linked Mizan news agency.

The killing marks a significant blow to Iran’s internal security structure at a time when the country is already under sustained military pressure.

"Sardar Gholamreza Soleimani was martyred," Mizan wrote, warning that "the mujahid Basij forces will never abandon the quest for vengeance."

Israel had earlier claimed responsibility for the strike, saying Soleimani was one of two senior Iranian security officials targeted. The Israeli military said in a post on X that he was "deceased after the attack early Tuesday."

GHOLAMREZA SOLEIMANI AND DISSENT

Soleimani’s role placed him at the centre of Iran’s domestic security apparatus. As head of the Basij — a volunteer militia under the IRGC with hundreds of thousands of members — he oversaw operations allegedly focused on suppressing dissent.

He was first sanctioned by the US and the European Union in 2021 over his alleged role in crushing protests going back to the disputed presidential election of 2009.

The Basij force, which Soleimani headed, is generally considered the primary choice of the Shia theocracy to suppress any public show of dissent, with their role being particularly documented during the brutal clampdown on the widespread protests that took place across Iran following the 2022 custodial death of Mahsa Amini.

According to the US Treasury, the Basij killed "hundreds of Iranian men, women and children" when it cracked down on protests in 2019.

SOLEIMANI'S RISE THROUGH RANKS

Soleimani's killing comes at a volatile moment, with Iran engaged in escalating missile and drone exchanges across the region.

He was born in 1964 in Farsan, in Iran’s Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province. Soleimani's first joined the Basij as a volunteer in 1984 during the Iran-Iraq war, when it was notorious for launching human wave attacks at fortified positions of Iraqi forces.

He went on to take part in major operations, gradually rising through the ranks. Soleimani became the commander of the Basij in 2019.
