Wildfires continue to rage across California, claiming 24 lives and challenging firefighting efforts. Strong winds, exacerbated by recent snowstorms, have hampered the Joe Biden administration’s attempts to contain the blazes.

In a unique initiative to combat the disaster, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is offering prisoners a chance to help extinguish the fires in exchange for reduced sentences and pay.

CNN reports show prisoners working alongside firefighters, digging containment lines in Los Angeles. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation stated that 931 inmates are currently engaged in firefighting efforts. Working 24-hour shifts, these prisoners are creating fire breaks and clearing vegetation to control the spread of the devastating wildfires.

Incentivising Inmate Involvement

Prisoners participating in the firefighting efforts are earning between $5.80 and $10.24 per day, based on their skills and experience. They are also eligible for an additional $1 per hour in emergency pay. A key incentive is the “2 for 1" credit system, where each day combating fires earns prisoners two days off their sentences. Support staff receive a “1 for 1" credit, reducing their sentences by one day for each day worked.

“Wildfires are a significant challenge for California, and we are fully committed to fighting them," California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Secretary Jeff Macomber said speaking to CNN. “The work of our incarcerated firefighters and staff is a part of this effort, and their service is critical in protecting life and property during emergencies," he added.

No cause has been determined for the fires. According to early estimates, the wildfires could be the nation’s costliest ever. As per a preliminary estimate by AccuWeather, the damage and economic losses from the fire so far may be between USD 135 billion and USD 150 billion.
