Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-nation visit, was honoured with Nigeria’s second highest national honour ‘The Grand Commander of The Order of the Niger’ by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday.

Notably, Queen Elizabeth is the only foreign dignitary who has been awarded GCON in 1969. This will be the 17th such international award being conferred to PM Modi by a country.

Expressing gratitude to the Nigerian government at the presidential villa, PM Modi dedicated the award to 140 crore Indians and to the deep friendship between India and Nigeria. “This award will keep inspiring us to take the India-Nigeria strategic partnership to new heights," he added.

The Prime Minister also asserted that India-Nigeria ties are based on cooperation, goodwill and mutual respect with a deep-rooted bond in social and cultural diversity. “With the visit of President Tinubu to India last year, a new aspect has been added to our relations," he said.

PM Modi also recalled detailed discussions with President Tinubu earlier today. “We have identified new possibilities in economy, energy, agriculture, security, fintech, small and medium state enterprises and cultural areas. As a close and trusted partner, special emphasis will be placed on skill development and capacity building as per the necessities of the people of Nigeria," he said.

Modi arrived in the Nigerian capital early Sunday on the first trip to the West African country by an Indian prime minister after a gap of 17 years, and received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora. He will further travel to Brazil to attend the G20 Summit and Guyana in the next leg of his five-day tour.
