Sources say Congress thinks that, given the style of Sarma, elections in the state will be personality-driven, and Gogoi, who is battling controversies, could put up a brave fight

All eyes are on Assam, which goes to polls in 2026. It’s a state poll which, at one time, generated not much interest but has now grabbed eyeballs, courtesy the accusations made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma has alleged that Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi and his wife visited Pakistan multiple times without informing the Union government, adding that his wife has links with Pakistan.
The developments come at a time when the Congress is mulling appointment of a new Assam president. Could it be Gogoi?
The probability cannot be ruled out. Gone is the Congress of old days that used to be defensive and wary of appointing and putting leaders in places where it felt that it could lead to controversy. Now, the party is in the mood to take on the BJP. This is why Gogoi could end up being the face of the party in the state—either as state president or campaign committee head.
Sources say the reasoning is that Gogoi holds no official role in the state and yet, he is constantly mentioned. “That itself shows his political relevance."
Sources say the Congress thinks that given the style of Sarma, the elections in the state will be personality-driven. Gogoi, who is under the scanner and battling controversies, could put up a brave fight against the chief minister. They see it as a contrast in style, which could work for the Congress in the state. It will also show that the central leadership is backing Gogoi.
But, there is a flip side too. Given the post-Operation Sindoor sentiment in the country, any controversy surrounding Pakistan could be a dampener. For now, the articulate, young Gogoi, armed with the legacy of Tarun Gogoi, has an edge. So, will he make the cut?
