The online food ordering platform has delisted the bakery which resulted in the death of the girl

Zomato expressed its condolences to the grieving family who lost their child and stated that they had delisted the bakery and banned the owner.

In a shocking turn of events recently, a 10-year-old girl died during a birthday celebration in Patiala. The tragic incident occurred reportedly after she ate her birthday cake, which was ordered online via the food delivery app Zomato.

The sudden death has not only devastated the family, but also sparked widespread worry about the safety standards of food outlets listed on popular delivery platforms. Following the tragedy, Zomato expressed their condolences to the grieving family. The platform also decided to take swift action and delist the bakery from its application.

In response to the incident, Zomato’s spokesperson conveyed, “We are deeply saddened by the recent incident in Patiala. We have immediately delisted the restaurant and barred the owner from operating on our platform. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement officials in their investigation.” Reportedly, the cake was from the Patiala based bakery, Cake Kanha.

After the incident, the deceased girl's grandfather, Harbhanj Lal, narrated what happened on that fateful day. He stated that the family ordered the cake at 6 p.m. and celebrated her birthday around 7 p.m. on March 24. By 10 p.m. that night, the entire family had fallen sick. The 10 year old girl, Manvi, and her sister had started vomiting. He stated that, fortunately, the youngest sister survived after vomiting the cake. However, Manvi asked for water, citing acute thirst. As Manvi's condition deteriorated, her family rushed her to the hospital the following morning. She was given oxygen and had an ECG, but she could not survive.

The grandfather also shared that health officials did not help them much. He told NDTV, “The health department officer refused to take the sample of the cake that we had ordered. The officer insisted they will take samples only from the shop where the cake was baked.”

Meanwhile, an FIR was filed against the bakery owner, and officials had earlier stated that they had sent a sample of the cake for testing and that a postmortem of the young girl’s body would also be performed. Since this incident also raised questions regarding the safety condition of small food businesses, Patiala Superintendent of Police Sarfaraz Alam stated, “We are also monitoring this concept of cloud kitchen because the name of the bakery kept changing in Zomato,” as quoted by NDTV.
