1 lakh eggs stolen from US store: Unknown thieves have stolen over 1 lakh eggs worth $40,000 from a single department store in Pennsylvania, US, amid a hike in prices due to bird flu.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the heist targeted the back of a lorry at Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle on February 1 at 8:40 pm.

In a statement to USA Today, Pete & Gerry’s emphasised their commitment to addressing the matter swiftly, though they declined to offer further comment.

An investigation into the theft is ongoing. As of Tuesday, state police stated that no additional details could be released. The department is encouraging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Chambersburg bureau at 717-264-5161.

WHY ARE EGG PRICES GOING UP

As reported by BBC News, the rising cost of eggs, driven by a bird flu epidemic, has made them an unexpectedly expensive option on menus. Waffle House, the national chain, recently raised its egg prices.

US government data shows that egg prices have jumped by over 65% in the past year, with the agriculture department predicting a further 20% increase in 2025.

On Tuesday, Waffle House introduced a $0.50 surcharge per egg for customers. The diner chain referred to it as a “temporary targeted surcharge" due to the unprecedented spike in egg prices.

The bird flu epidemic, which began in 2022, has caused widespread outbreaks across the U.S. in recent months, according to the agriculture department. The agency noted that prices rose by more than 8% in December alone.

In December 2023, the average price for a carton of eggs was $2.51, but by December 2024, it had reached $4.15. This surge has led to reports of empty shelves in some stores.

The bird flu has affected birds, cattle, and mammals across the country, although human infections remain extremely rare.
