A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.4 jolted Japan’s Ishikawa and other central Japan prefectures on Tuesday, the country’s weather agency said.
However, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued by the weather agency, reported Associated Press.
According to the preliminary information, the earthquake occurred at a depth of around 10 km off the western coast of the prefecture measuring a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Ishkiwara’s Noto, a region which is still recovering from the deadly January 1 earthquakes.
NHK public television said no abnormality was reported Tuesday at a nuclear power plant on the northern tip of the Noto Peninsula. Two idled reactors at the Shika nuclear power plant suffered minor damage, though there was no radiation leak — rekindling concern about nuclear safety and emergency response in the region.
As a precautionary measure, bullet trains have been suspended between Toyama and Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, the news outlet reported.
Noto January 1 Earthquakes
The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) had said that at least 155 earthquakes along with the aforementioned 7.5-magnitude earthquake (and the 6-magnitude aftershock that followed closely after) struck Japan on January 1.
The massive earthquake had toppled buildings, triggered landslides and sparked a massive fire. Video footage shared on social media and also shared by Japanese local news outlets showed restaurant doors and street signs shaking due to the intensity of the earthquake. At a karaoke bar in Ishikawa, people were heard crying for help as tables were recorded shaking intensely following the earthquake, spilling drinks from glasses.
Over 370 people lost their lives and 33,000 houses were impacted by the earthquake and were left without power.
