The TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh has sent a delegation to Karnataka to study the Shakti scheme of the Congress, which the Chandrababu Naidu government plans to replicate in the state.

The Siddaramaiah government’s Shakti Scheme, which provides free bus travel for women across four state-run corporations — Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), and Kalyan Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) — is one of the five flagship schemes that handed the Congress a thumping majority in the 2023 assembly elections.

A team of Andhra ministers, including transport minister Ramprasad Reddy, home minister Vangalapudi Anitha, and women and child development minister Sandhya Rani, held a meeting with Karnataka transport minister Ramalinga Reddy at the KSRTC head office in Bengaluru on Friday to enquire about the details of the scheme before meeting the chief minister.

The visit comes at a time when the opposition BJP-JDS alliance is up in arms against the scheme in Karnataka, condemning the recently announced bus fares hike in the state and blaming it on the mismanagement of the Shakti scheme.

Leader of opposition in the legislative council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, said the ‘Karnataka Model’ was a failed one and added that the Naidu government would suffer losses too if they implemented the Congress guarantee.

However, transport minister Reddy dismissed any politics around the meet, saying that the team of ministers from Andhra enquired about all details of the Shakti scheme and the delegation would go to any state to take such good suggestions. When asked about BJP’s questions over the guarantee’s replication in Andhra Pradesh, Reddy refused to comment, saying that was up to the Naidu government’s discretion.
