Bangladeshi Hindus have taken to the streets demanding the release of Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) monk and Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu.
The monk was detained by Bangladeshi officials while leaving Dhaka and taken to an undisclosed location, sources told CNN-News18.
However, Hindu groups in Dhaka, have said that Krishna Das was arrested. Indian lawmakers like Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the arrest was a ploy against Hindus by the interim government led by Nobel laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus.
Taslima Nasrin, renowned author and an outspoken critic of religious fundamentalism, shared videos of protests from Chattogram.
Protests were also carried out in Shahbag square, heart of capital city Dhaka. Demonstrations were also reported from Barishal.
Unverified reports from Hindu groups in Bangladesh have claimed on social media that some miscreants attacked the protesters in Chittagong and near Dhaka University leading to several injuries. News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of these reports.
Videos shared by news outlets like Kalbelaonline claimed miscreants attacked peaceful protesters demanding the release of Krishna Das Prabhu.
Krishna Das was detained while leaving Dhaka at the city’s airport and taken into custody by Detective Branch. CNN-News18 has learned that several FIRs have been registered against him.
His supporters claim Krishna Das is being targeted by the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government for protesting attacks on Hindus since the toppling of the Sheikh Hasina-led regime earlier this year.
