A Bangladesh court freed Bangladesh ist Party (BNP) member and former junior minister Abdus Salam Pintu who is known for funding and helping terrorist groups like Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) to attack India.

Salam helped HuJI procure weapons and was on death row for plotting a grenade attack on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He also ran recruitment and training programmes in camps in PoK. He was involved in terror financing and radicalising young students in madrassa with the help of HuJI, a terror group banned in Bangladesh, India, Israel, New Zealand, the UK and the US.

Lutfozzaman Babar, another involved in the botched attempt on Hasina’s life, was released along with Pintu last week.

Pintu helped HuJI gather weapons that would be used to attack India, according to investigation reports accessed by news agency PTI.

“Most of their recruits came from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) and Bangladesh… They had also mobilised funds, arms and ammunition for insurgents in Kashmir of India," an officer involved with the investigation told Bangladeshi news outlet The Daily Star, as per a 2021 report.

HuJI’s leadership sought to eliminate political figures, including Sheikh Hasina, due to her government’s stance against their operations.

Following the 2001 loss of power by the Hasina-led Awami League, HuJI received support from BNP leaders Lutfozzaman Babar and Abdus Salam Pintu, as per a 2021 Dhaka court ruling.

Abdus Salam Pintu had served as the deputy minister for information, industries, and education under former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia of the BNP.

HuJI is a designated terrorist organization known to collaborate with groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and it receives support from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
