A former school teacher in Maryland has been sentenced to three decades on charges of sexual offences with one of her minor students at least 20 times.

A 32-year-old woman, who worked as a school teacher in Maryland’s Montgomery County, was on November 15 sentenced to 30 years in prison on charges of having sex with a minor more than 20 times, a report with Fox 5 Washington DC has claimed.
The woman has been identified as Melissa Curtis and pleaded guilty to the sex offence charges on June 20, it stated.
The incident came to light in October 2023, when a man approached the police and alleged he had engaged in sexual acts with Curtis, who was then 22 years of age and teaching at Lakelands Park Middle School. The student, at that time, studied in eighth grade and was 14 years old.
The report quoted prosecutors and stated that the man, then a minor, was volunteering for an after-school program run by Curtis. He alleged he often used to be alone with the teacher.
Quoting investigators, the report stated that the “sexual assaults" continued for several months until the end of April 2015 at different locations including the school, inside of her car and at her mother’s house in Montgomery County.
Some documents also suggested Curtis offered alcohol and marijuana to the boy and that she had sexual intercourse with him more than 20 times, the report claimed.
As per the sentence, Curtis will spend 30 years in prison all but 12 months suspended and five years of supervised probation upon release for three counts of third-degree sex offense.
Once released, she would be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years and as a condition of probation, she will not be allowed to have unsupervised contact with minors other than her own children, the report stated.
