Russia’s aviation watchdog said on Thursday that all four Moscow airports and the airport in Kaluga, 160km (100 miles) southwest of Moscow, were closed temporarily, without giving the reason.

“Aircraft crews, air traffic controllers and airport services are taking all necessary measures to ensure flight safety," the statement from Rosaviatsia said.

The shutting down of the airports comes shortly after Russia accused the Ukrainian security services of instigating a spate of 55 arson and bomb attacks on banks, post offices and police cars across the country.

The interior ministry said in a statement that 44 suspects had been arrested, many of them elderly people and minors “looking for easy money".

It also said that it foiled several plots by Ukrainian intelligence services to kill high-ranking Russian officers and their families in Moscow using bombs disguised as power banks or document folders.
