Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday held a courtesy meeting with Bangladesh’s Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The interaction was being described as a courtesy call, underscoring India’s engagement with key political stakeholders in Bangladesh.
Misri along with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited Dhaka to attend the inauguration of the newly elected government.
Birla attended the ceremony in Dhaka as the special envoy of the Government of India and conveyed PM Modi’s greetings and best wishes to Rahman on assuming office. He also handed over an invitation from the Prime Minister for an official visit to India.
“Just concluded a constructive meeting with Prime Minister of Bangladesh @trahmanbnp. I handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister @narendramodi conveying his wishes to PM Rahman and inviting him to visit India at the earliest convenience," Birla tweeted and shared photos from the meeting.
Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, leading the country’s first elected government since the deadly 2024 uprising.
The oath was administered by Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin under the open sky at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the national parliament building, rather than at Bangabhaban, the President’s official residence where such ceremonies are usually held.
Dozens of Cabinet members were also sworn in during the ceremony, which was broadcast live on state television.
“I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of prime minister of the government in accordance with the law," Rahman said during the ceremony.
Rahman, 60, led the BNP to a landslide victory in the February 12 general elections. The party secured 209 of the 297 contested seats in the 13th parliamentary elections. The BNP coalition won 212 seats overall, while the Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats. The Awami League of former premier Sheikh Hasina was barred from contesting the polls.
