Zohran Mamdani asserted that his campaign had “toppled a political dynasty" as he was elected mayor of New York City in one of the most stunning political upsets in the city’s history. The 34-year-old democratic socialist will become New York’s 111th mayor and its first Muslim leader after defeating independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory was powered by a grassroots coalition stretching from Brooklyn’s gentrified neighborhoods to the immigrant enclaves of Queens. His campaign focused on taxing the wealthy, expanding social programs and tackling the city’s affordability crisis.

What Zohran Mamdani Said In His Victory Speech

Addressing jubilant supporters at his campaign headquarters, Zohran Mamdani told the cheering crowd, “My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty."

He continued, “For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that power does not belong in their hands. And yet, over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater. Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands."

Offering a conciliatory note to his defeated rival, he said, “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time that I utter his name."

Zohran Mamdani then delivered an emotional tribute to his parents saying, “You have made me into the man I am today. I am so proud to be your son". He also thanked his wife Rama, saying there was “no one I would rather have by my side in this moment and in every moment."

He highlighted the diverse coalition that fueled his campaign, thanking “Yemeni bodega owners, Senegalese taxi drivers, Uzbek nurses and Ethiopian aunties."

Reflecting on the struggles of ordinary New Yorkers, Zohran Mamdani recalled a conversation with a woman he met on a Bronx bus who told him, “I used to love New York. Now it’s just where I live." The line later featured in his final campaign ad and became a symbol of his message of renewal.

“We are breathing in the air of a city that has been reborn," Zohran Mamdani said, promising “a new city" for working families.

“Now we will have to deliver. Tonight, New York has chosen a new dawn- one built not by the powerful, but by the people," he concluded.
