GST 2.0 will make a lot of things cheaper but will laptops also join them?

The GST 2.0 changes are gradually coming into effect in India, with car makers and other sectors passing on the benefits to the buyers. Even the daily essential items will get cheaper once the changes come into effect later this week. However, the smartphone industry has got no reprieve from the government, which means the iPhone and other brands will continue to sell them at more or less the same prices.

The other main gadget attraction for buyers is the laptop segment and sadly they are not going to see things change either.

Laptops Will Not Get Cheaper: Here’s Why

Just like the mobile phones are in the 18 percent GST bracket like the previous slab, the laptop business also sees no change in the GST slab and its current rate will continue even after September 22, 2025.

As we have said before, the smartphone industry was hoping for some tax break from the GST Council, but most reports claimed any change in the tax rates was unlikely. The 18 percent GST on one of the most-demanding industries helps the government earn money.

By keeping mobile phones and laptops out of the new slab, the government has essentially deemed them as non-essentials which is quite intriguing.

And with the festive season around the corner, the GST rate cuts are primed to entice consumers into making the big purchases and get a good deal on them. TVs, ACs and dishwashers are some of the segments that have been offered the GST rate cuts.

This means if you have been in the market for a big-screen LED TV, we advise you to wait for another week to splurge and save some money so that you can buy a little higher than your current budget.

The latest iPhone 17 series will be available before that and instead of seeing the new models get some price benefit, you will have to spend extra. The base iPhone 17 now comes with 256GB storage and is priced at Rs 82,999. The iPhone Air is Rs 20,000 more than the iPhone 16 Plus, while the 17 Pro starts over Rs 1,34,000 in the country.
