US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will attend Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, a White House spokesman said on Monday, calling it a “demonstration of commitment to our democratic values and to honouring the will of the people."
The decision stunned many as then-President Trump refused to attend Biden’s inauguration in 2021, after accusing the Democrats of winning the election by fraudulent means. The Republican supporters also stormed into the US capitol.
“The president promised that he would attend the inauguration of whomever won the election," said Andrew Bates, senior deputy press secretary at the White House, adding that Biden and the First Lady “will honour that promise and attend the inauguration."
During the 2024 presidential campaign, Biden described Trump as a threat to democracy. However, after the US election results gave a majority to Trump, Biden vowed to provide Trump with the smooth transition that the Republicans denied him.
“He views that as an important demonstration of commitment to our democratic values and to honoring the will of the people, as we continue to provide an orderly and effective transition," Bates added.
