A student fleeing the deadly shooting at Brown University texted his mother describing the terrifying moment, as two people were killed and eight others critically injured in the attack.

Speaking to Fox News, Shamsah Amersi said her son, Jaden Anselmo, messaged her as gunfire erupted inside the Barus & Holley Engineering Building on Saturday. “They (students) are in the middle of finals, so they were all on campus studying… the first text I get from my son is ‘Mom, there’s a live shooting on campus. I’m going to run, and I love you,'" Amersi said.

Amersi told Fox News she kept texting her son, urging him to silence his phone. She said Jaden barricaded himself inside a supply closet with 12 other students as police locked down the campus. Authorities confirmed that the shooter, described as a man dressed in black, was still at large, and a shelter-in-place order remained in effect across the University.

Brown University said in an update that two victims had died and eight others were in critical but stable condition, with police and FBI teams coordinating efforts to locate the suspect. The alert acknowledged campus-wide fear and uncertainty, urging students and residents to follow law enforcement instructions and avoid the area.

Police said the gunman entered the engineering building before exiting on the Hope Street side, as investigators continued to piece together how he gained access.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told CNN that local authorities, the FBI and university officials were working “closely" to track down the attacker. Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara said, “We are using every resource available to locate this suspect," adding that officers were still determining the shooter’s point of entry. As the manhunt continued, Amersi said she remained in contact with her son until he was safely out of the building — but the fear in his text message, she said, was something she will never forget.
