An armed suspect has allegedly opened fire at a school in southern Thailand and taken students and teachers hostage, according to local authorities. The incident occurred at Patong Prathan Khiri Wit School in Songkhla province’s Hat Yai district. Armed police arrived at the scene as hundreds of students fled the building onto surrounding roads. A number of teachers and pupils remain trapped inside as officers attempt to negotiate with the gunman.

A security guard who escaped told local media: “A bullet grazed my stomach, but I escaped. The school director was shot. There were still children inside the school who have been taken hostage."

According to police, the school principal has been seriously injured. The exact number of casualties remains unclear at this time.

Hat Yai police and special operations units have surrounded the school and established a security perimeter. The public has been warned to avoid the area for their own safety as authorities work to control the situation.

Rescue teams are evacuating individuals from safe areas of the building.

The Mae Taptim Yala Foundation confirmed on its Facebook page that at least one teacher was shot and rushed to hospital.
